What Is SMUT (History)?

STRANGE MODELERS OF UNIVERSAL TRAINS

Group founded by-Brad Peadon
The initial idea of small new group of friends first came forth 2010.

A combination of disenchantment with official groups, the attitude of many railfans out there and a concept seen utilized elsewhere, lead me to try and replicate the idea in the model railway world.
Starting on Yahoogroups we soon formed a small core of good people, we later also started a Facebook site.

The concept of the SMUT Modelers Group has always been to create a close family club type atmosphere, with conversations revolving around that which you may normally hear amongst mates in a club room.
This ideal has grown into a desire to help rural preservation societies through fund raising efforts operating tours.
We are here to help each other, have social events and modeling nights, talk about things (not necessarily trains) and further the enjoyment of our hobby through each others company.
We hope, one day, to even have something to exhibit at exhibitions.ROD_PECKER

Our members are a wide and varied lot, ranging from modelers and retailers, through to manufacturers and a plastic model made in China. The interests of these members are equally as wide ranging, covering many countries including our own, in N, HO and even O.

In 2013 (the 13 probably being a good indication) we made the fatal mistake of opening the Facebook group to one and all, leaving the Yahoogroup one to the smaller community. This allowed our group to rapidly expand up towards 100 people which, as is often the case, allowed in the usual people who’s sole purpose in life is destroy the enjoyment of the hobby and others involvement in it.
The problems got out of hand, so a new group was formed and the old system reverted to.
The old group still remains under a different name where the troublemakers can continue to build their nest.

CHANGES as time passes by.

While we continue the social group and modelling events we were formed to do, we have expanded into tours and site visits that aim to financially help the various railway museums around NSW.
Over the last few years we have run rail tours to Naradhan (the first 44 class to visit there) and to Lake Cargelligo (first steam loco in nearly 3 decades), this going to help a local school, Temora Station Museum and the Lachlan Valley Railway.
Who knows what the future holds. We continue to research and publish historical items, along with our emagazine ‘The SMUTTER’, while we already have events already planned until the end of 2017.
Wherever we go, I hope we are able to help rural rail preservation along the way, and continue to do it all with our SMUT family.
